Hairstylist Lacy Redway and Jason Rembert Announce That the Black Fashion & Beauty Collective — Interview

We want more Dark beauty professionals. Not only on our Instagram feeds or at our regional salons, but anywhere — notably behind the scenes of films, red carpet events, runway shows, and editorial shoots, in which pop culture is synthesized. This is not a new issue whatsoever, but the current, successive deaths of numerous unarmed Black individuals and the following Black Lives Issue uprising has forced us to guess with the dearth of Dark creatives within our attractiveness communities (and everywhere else). 

To give the beauty and fashion business the diversity increase it so desperately desires, hairstylist Lacy Redway has cofounded a brand new nonprofit organization with style stylist Jason Rembert.

Place soon, The Dark Fashion & Beauty Collective is a set of Dark fashion stylists, hairstylists, and makeup artists that will function in partnership with various industry leaders to make diversity initiatives and nurture careers for Dark creatives. 

“The BFB Collective intends to make initiatives in cooperation with other people in the industry, such as designers, fashion houses, manufacturing companies, as well as individuals who only have a deep appreciation for the artistry within style and beauty,” a statement in the Collective reads. “These projects will concentrate on developing instruction and career development opportunities for aspiring creatives, creating business diversification standards for corporations and brands, providing resources to encourage members together with their professional objectives, and fostering community participation and service.”

The development of the organization isn’t a knee-jerk response to current events, incidentally. Redway informs Allure that it has been in the works for quite a while. “We awakened this idea about a year and a half ago,” she states. “We ordered a little dinner to talk about how we could come together as performers within our sector to make change.”

Based on Redway, the present members of the Collective are discussing details about long-term initiatives, however in the meantime, it’s established a Black Fashion and Beauty Relief Fund in partnership with My Block, My Hood, My City, an educational nonprofit for underprivileged youth in Chicago. “The objective is to offer support for companies affected as a consequence of the high tension encompassing police brutality using a unique focus on people not shielded by their own insurance companies or whose insurance claims were refused,” that the Collective states in a statement.
