Beauty Organizations Are Revealing Diversity Statistics and Efforts at #PullUpOrShutUp Challenge, Montreal Manicure

On June 3, in service of this Black Lives Issue motion, Uoma Beauty creator Sharon Chuter issued an industry-wide challenge named #PullUpOrShutUp. Attempting to determine the beauty business’s lack of Dark representation and organizational addition attempts, Chuter’s challenge encouraged manufacturers to share how a lot of its workers are Black — and also just how a lot of those Black workers are in positions of leadership.

The #PullUpOrShutUp challenge, as Chuter shared on Instagram, serves as a litmus test for gauging which brands comprehend the value of supporting and hiring Black men and women. “Your favorite brands are creating daring PR statements regarding their service for the black community,” she wrote on June 3. “Please inquire how many black workers they have within their company (HQ and satellite offices ONLY) and the number of black folks they’ve in leadership functions. For your following 72 hours don’t buy from any manufacturer and need they release these amounts Request them to PULL UP or SHUT UP.”

Five days after, cosmetic businesses with varied and not-so-diverse teams are still reacting to the #PullUpOrShutUp struggle in droves and are recognizing that the duty they must actively employ more Black group members, particularly in executive ranks. Furthermore, Chuter has put up the Instagram accounts @PullUpForChange to monitor and record beauty firms’ answers to her ordeal.
