Did Emily Ratajkowski Just Invent a New Type of Blunt Bang at the 2023 Met Gala? — See Photos

Fashion’s biggest night is the perfect excuse to arrive with a bang. Emily Ratajkowski took that quite literally, debuting fresh fringe as she walked onto the white carpet of the 2023 Met Gala. Taking it a step further is the fact it was unlike any chop we have seen before — the bangs were noticeably asymmetrical and perfectly imperfect. 

Whereas most blunt bangs are defined by precision, EmRata’s new look has much more of an edge. Shortest in the center, her bangs fanned out in length, with longer, face-framing pieces on each side. Her hairstylist, Jennifer Yepez, is sponsored by Great Lengths hair extensions for the occasion, so we suspect the new fringe might be a clip-in. It remains a mystery though, since they blend so seamlessly with her hair. In a video Yepez posted on her Instagram story, Ratajkowski shared the reason why she made the cut to an interviewer: “Well, I have bangs and I just wanted them shorter.”

Aligned with the night’s theme, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” the rest of EmRata’s hair was swept back into a half-up style, secured with the help of a black bow, a signature Chanel accessory. The nod to Lagerfeld couldn’t be simpler — or prettier. With such a wow-factor head-on, the ribbon made for a stunning surprise in the back, along with voluminous, cascading curls. 

The drama continued with Ratajkowski’s makeup by Linda Hay, a makeup artist for Pat McGrath Labs. Her bold smokey eyes were defined with a trace of inky, liquid liner (specifically, Pat McGrath Labs Perma Precision Liquid Eyeliner in Xtreme Black) and layers and layers of Pat McGrath Labs Dark Star Mascara. EmRata’s strong brows are the exclamation mark of her makeup. With her eyes as the focal point, rosy cheeks and soft, pink lips (a combination of lipstick and gloss) keep the look romantic. 

As inspiring as EmRata’s look might be to DIY some choppy fringe, we suggest using your scissors to cut a piece of ribbon instead. Like bangs, it too can also make a statement when tied in a bow — but without any commitment.
