daily, without fail, you will discover me slathering sunscreen in my head. After not wearing SPF often for your first 22 years of my life, it is essentially become my method of sending a love letter for my own skin. (Post-college “mature” life changed me to the better, in this particular case.) But, I would be lying when I said I was not picky about my sunscreens. For me personally, it is as much about the easy application procedure since it’s about the real advantages of wearing sunscreen.

Appearance, a few individuals will endure by mineral sunscreens, and when they were the sole alternative available — certain, I would, also. However, if I am picking from a variety of broad-spectrum (meaning that it protects against both UVA and UVB rays) sunscreens which are at or over the American Academy of Dermatology-recommended SPF 30 degree — barring any aggravation or side effects — I will opt for a sunscreen that I will really like placing on daily.

Sarah Han/Allure

My current favorite is Flesh Beauty’s Sheer Flesh Hydrating Serum, that can be a compound sunscreen which provides broad-spectrum SPF 35 protection. “Chemical sunscreens penetrate the upper layers of skin and absorb UV rays to stop them from causing harm,” Y. Claire Chang, a naturopathic dermatologist at nyc, explains.

Sheer Flesh includes common chemical sunscreen ingredients, such as homosalate, octisalate, and avobenzone (however doesn’t include oxybenzone or octinoxate), however there are in fact over 30 chemical sunscreen ingredients. “A mix of components is frequently used together to guarantee broad-spectrum coverage,” Chang says.

Cosmetic sunscreens, on the other hand, are created with ingredients such as zinc oxide and carbon dioxide. “They’re small mineral particles which sit on the top layer of the skin and also act as a [physical] barrier to signify UVA and UVB rays from skin,” Chang says.

Science aside, let us get into why Sheer Flesh, in my estimation, is one of the best sunscreens on the market. Because most people of colour would agree (although I am relatively light-skinned), I don’t like dealing with white cast or taking a long time to fully rub in sunscreen. “Chemical sunscreens tend to be more lightweight and non-stickyso they are generally easier to apply and do not leave a whitening effect,” Chang says, speaking to their appeal.

So not only does Sheer Flesh absorb immediately without any hint of residue, but it’s also really hydrating — which I’m about all day, every day. It feels like a cool burst of moisture, and my skin can’t get enough of it. To be specific, it’s infused with glycerin, pomegranate, and honey extract — all ingredients that hydrate and nourish skin. I swear it also gives my skin a slightly dewy finish, that I will usually just achieve with makeup solutions.
