During time, we’ve observed Black artists craft tunes in their own hair and all of the feelings that have this. In 2006, India Aria’s “I’m Not My Hair” functioned as a reminder that for Black girls, our hair does not always need to be a political statement — it could only be. Ten decades after, Solange published “Do not Touch My Hair” on let people know to keep their hands to themselves and Black girls deserve independence over their bodies and hair. Now, Gabriella Wilson, most commonly called H.E.R., has produced a love song devoted to her own hair, which continues on Elmo’s brand new talk show, the Sesame Street spinoff Not-Too-Late Display.

On July 17, that the artist shared the movie of her performance of “I really like My Hair” on IGTV. Our preferred red childhood buddy, Elmo, begins the movie by introducing H.E.R., who’s preparing to play in a grey sweatshirt, burgundy plaid trousers, and white platform shoes. Together with her acoustic guitar in hand, she begins singing, “I really like something, yes, I really do.”

For the next two minutes, H.E.R. shares the love she has for her own hair in all the various forms this takes. “I put on it up, I wear down it, I use it twisted all around, I use braids and pigtails also , I love all the things my hair can do,” she sings in her soothing voice. Like she states in her lyricsof the star has worn her own hair in box braids, slicked-back low ponytails, and top knots full of volume. Her signature look is her beautiful, long hair parted down the middle with waves cascading towards her hips, similar to how she’s wearing it in the video.

As she participates about different hairstyles, Muppets with each style walk across the screen. The four muppets, shown above, each whip and shake their heads to show off their hair.

To finish the song, she continues, “In barrettes or flying free, they’re the perfect tresses, you see. My hair is part of me, an awesome part of me. I really love my hair,” earning a round of applause from the audience.

We are thankful to H.E.R. for giving us this lovely little song, and can’t wait to hear people all over blasting it when they want a few moments of peace and a boost of own hair confidence.
